Taking remote screen captures over the network

Notice - This information is out of date.  We're redirecting you to the new website, now.  If nothing happens, please click here.

Requirements

  • VNC Server is NOT required for this feature to work

  • Bozteck VENM Console 2006.10.3 or later (Download Here)

  • Remote computer must be Windows 2000 or better

  • Windows file sharing ports can't be blocked by firewall

  • You must have administrator access on remote computer.  Help on enabling this in the VNCScan console can be found here.

How It's Done

  1. Start by right-clicking a computer and choose 'Thumbnails' and then add the computer to a new or existing tab.

  2. If you set up an administrative login as shown on this page, you will notice the text "Authenticating with <computer name>" at the bottom of the console in the status bar.

  3. After authentication, you will be taken to the Thumbnails tab and an object will be created for the computer(s) that you chose.

  4. A "Please Wait" screen will show up until the first screen shot has been gathered from the remote computer:

  5. After a moment, the first screen is captured and placed into the thumbnail.  The progress bar under the picture shows how long until the next capture attempt:

  6. The thumbnails will continue to recapture every 35 seconds unless you tell it to stop by right-clicking the image and un-checking "Auto Refresh"

  7. If you double-click on the image, the thumbnail will open full size in the default image viewer for your computer.

Archiving Screen Captures

  1. Right-click a thumbnail and choose "Archive Screen Captures".

  2. After a few have been captures, right-click the same thumbnail and choose "Open Archive Folder

Troubleshooting

Problem: Thumbnail is just a white image

Answer: This happens if the remote computer does not have anyone logged in or if it has been locked at the console

Problem: The "Please Wait" screen never goes away

Answer: This happens if you do not have Administrator access to the remote computer or if a firewall is blocking the ports required for Windows Files haring.  One fix would be to use these instructions to put VNCScan into an administrative level for the remote computer.

If that doesn't work, then try downloading the simple setup for workstations and running it on the remote computer.  This simple setup will take care of opening the required ports and configurations.
